Indian Food in New Orleans

Indian Food in New Orleans

New Orleans is famous for its food culture, but it's not all about beignets and gumbo. We are also home to many ethnic restaurants serving delicious Indian food. New Orleans may not have the largest community of Asian Indians, as they make up only .25 percent of the city's population, but Indian restaurants can be found speckled throughout. These restaurants offer New Orleanians and visitors a refreshing break from traditional New Orleans fare with many vegetarian options.

Largely influenced by religion and culture, meals served at Indian restaurants are generally vegetarian because of dharmic beliefs having to do with Hindu ideas of the natural order of life. A typical meal may include curries, traditional pushpanna rice, samosas (fried pastries filled with peas and cauliflower), pakoras (vegetables served in a chickpea batter), and rice pudding for dessert. Flavor pairing in Indian cuisine is counterintuitive, with disparate flavors appearing in the same dish. This uncommon use of flavors is part of what makes Indian food so unique and delicious.

If you're interested in a free vegetarian Indian meal, the Hare Krishna Temple on Esplanade has been serving food to locals and visitors alike every Sunday for over 30 years.

There is a wide variety of restaurants throughout the greater metro area serving tasty Indian food. New Orleans tourists and locals can find unique flavors at these Indian restaurants, like cardamom, cayenne, and tamarind as well as plenty of vegetarian options that are hard to come by in the city.
