Japanese Restaurants in New Orleans

New Orleans Bistros

Like many international cuisines, Japanese restaurants have been a part of the New Orleans culinary culture for decades. Traditionally served with rice and miso soup, this cuisine emphasizes the use of seasonal ingredients to keep even the oldest, most popular recipes tasting fresh and new. Fish dishes are common in this diverse culinary tradition, and Japanese restaurants are particularly well known for their raw sashimi and sushi. Restaurants specializing in Japanese cuisine can be found all over New Orleans. Many visit the Irish Channel neighborhood for their sushi fix. Others travel Uptown for a glass of sake and a round of karaoke. Wherever you go to find Japanese restaurants, New Orleans is certain to provide a wealth of delicious Japanese food.

If you are new to the Japanese culinary tradition, start your taste buds on something classic. Standard Japanese dishes are known as ichiju-sansai, or “one soup and three sides.” True to its name, this stock meal allows the diner to combine numerous vegetables, meats, and rice in one unique meal. Placing different elements of a meal on the same plate is a food faux pas in Japan, so your soup and three sides will always be served in separate dishes. Using chopsticks, you can pick up and dip your food in tasty sauces or wasabi to add additional spice.

In addition to the standard meal, Japanese restaurants also serve larger entrees. Udon, or thick wheat noodles, are often served in a steaming bowl with vegetables, meat, and an egg. Shrimp and fish are often grilled or fried into tempura. Of course, raw meats and fish are sliced into thin strips to create sashimi or rolled with seaweed to make sushi. While those new to Japanese restaurants may feel nervous about eating raw fish, they can rest assured that the itame, or sushi chef, spends years honing his craft so he can deliver fresh, safe food.

To experience these Eastern delicacies, explore the list of most notable Japanese restaurants New Orleans has to offer!
