Mint Julep

Ramos Gin FizzWhile the mint julep is often associated with the Kentucky Derby, the refreshing and potent Summertime cocktail is just as at home in New Orleans as it is trackside at the races. For the true cocktail connoisseur, there is only one way to serve the drink – in sterling silver tumblers, coated with frost and filled with perfectly crushed ice. Many also claim that the preparation of a julep is a skill that must be practiced and perfected – it cannot be taught. Those who are less picky on the issue swear the libation tastes just as delicious in a highball or Collins glass, or even plastic “go” cups. No matter how it is served, this drink is an absolute must for any bourbon fan looking to recreate those perfect, southern Summer nights.

Mint Julep Recipe

  • 1 oz Mint Simple Syrup*
  • 2 oz bourbon
  • Fresh mint sprig, for garnish

Fill glass to the top with finely crushed ice. Pour in mint simple syrup, and bourbon, stir well and garnish with mint.

*if you don’t have mint simple syrup, muddle 4 sprigs of mint, 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar and 2 teaspoons of water in the bottom of a glass before adding bourbon.
