Looking for some evening fun and excitement in New Orleans this summer? Especially some fun and excitement that's family-friendly and FREE!? A short, quick and scenic ferry ride will take you to it as the Algiers Economic Development Foundation presents another season of the "Wednesdays on the Point" Summer Concert Series.

Algiers Point is the old section of New Orleans on the west bank of the Mississippi River, founded around the same time as the rest of the city in the early 1700s. To commemorate the colorful history of "The Point" and its contributions to the development of jazz, Wednesdays on the Point presents some of the top musicians in the city internationally renowned for its music.

Concerts are held from 6-9 p.m. at the Algiers Ferry Landing every Wednesday evening for eight weeks during June, July and August. A ride aboard the Canal Street-Algiers Ferry takes you right to the site. It couldn't be any easier! And no worries about parking, either.

For those who want to keep the action going after the concerts, a number of nearby pubs – all within walking distance of the ferry – offer live music or other forms of entertainment and camaraderie. Foremost among them are the Old Point Bar, the Dry Dock Café and the Crown and Anchor Pub.

During these Wednesday night concerts, food and beverages are offered for sale. There are also a number of fun events and treats for the kids. And, as a special treat, the concert that is held during the Fourth of July week is rescheduled to whatever day Independence Day happens to fall on. This allows visitors to enjoy the spectacular fireworks display over the river at 9:00 p.m. The New Orleans fireworks, launched from a barge anchored in the Mississippi River on July 4, has been consistently rated among the best in the United States.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Ferries run about every fifteen minutes between Canal Street downtown and Algiers Point but keep a close watch on the time. They stop running around midnight and a cab ride back to downtown may cost you a lot more than what you budgeted for.
