Healthy Dining in New Orleans

Healthy Dining in New Orleans

Healthy Dining in New Orleans

You may not think of New Orleans as a hotbed for healthy dining, but the city has more options now than ever for the health-conscious foodie. Because of the area’s subtropical climate, New Orleans has access to fresh fruits and vegetables all year round, and the city’s proximity to the Gulf of Mexico provides a fresh supply of gulf seafood to local restaurants.

The Creoles of New Orleans were some of the first “locavores,” building upon beloved French, Spanish and Caribbean and cooking styles to use local ingredients such as mirliton, satsuma, bell peppers, creole tomatoes, shrimp and crawfish. Today, many New Orleans restaurants craft seasonal menus, inspired by locally sourced produce available.

Many New Orleans restaurants also offer menu items and options to those seeking to eat vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free. Though there are few restaurants focusing solely on these lifestyle choices, most New Orleans chefs are more than happy to accommodate dietary restrictions, food allergies or general health preferences. If you are unsure if the restaurant of your choice will make accommodations, we recommend calling ahead for certainty.

Health-conscious travelers will be delighted to find that they can visit the city, and experience its unique cuisine, without compromising their healthy lifestyle. You can find vegetarian versions of gumbo, jambalaya and po-boys, and even special twists like fresh-juice snowballs and daiquiris. Healthful eating and having fun are perfectly compatible in New Orleans!
