Mardi Gras Krewes

Shangri-La
By Arthur Hardy

Shangri-La

A central feature in James Hilton’s famous 1933 novel, Lost Horizon, was a fictional kingdom where peace, love, tranquility and eternal youth prevailed. This krewe chose that place as its namesake when it was formed in 1973. The club was first organized in St. Bernard with a membership of 280 women. Seven years ago the club moved its parade to New Orleans. Shangri-La’s Carnival activities are annually sponsored by Kaly Nickta, Inc., whose Oriental motif is finely executed throughout the parade.
