New Orleans Art Galleries

Spring Fiesta
Spring Fiesta

In New Orleans, we like to surround ourselves with art of all kinds. Throughout the city, you’ll find charming courtyards, storefronts and entire warehouses filled with paintings, sculptures and crafts. Roam into one of these spaces to discover the history and stories of the locals that shape this city’s unmatchable character. And if you feel inspired, you can even take a little piece of New Orleans back home.

Streets of Interest

Royal Street - Parallel to the bustling Bourbon Street, the courtyards on Royal invite you in with vibrant canvases and a local artist never too busy to chat. And be sure to stop by M.S. Rau and the other antique galleries, with centuries-old items from all over the world.

Julia Street - Nicknamed “Gallery Row”, Julia Street hosts renovated warehouses turned into sleek art galleries with modern, contemporary ambiance. Head to Julia Street on the first Saturday of every month at 6pm for extended gallery hours, tastings, music and more.

Magazine Street - Spend an entire day in the Garden District shopping the boutiques and ornate antiques on Magazine Street. And one of the best art walks of the year, Art for Art’s Sake, happens every fall on Magazine, with extra late hours, gallery sales and lots of free wine.

St. Claude - Nestled in the Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods pop up the quaint local galleries along St. Claude Ave. Each venue blends into its neighboring music clubs and shops, making it perfect for finding hidden gems. For the best of the St. Claude art scene, join the Second Saturday Art Walk from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. with over 20 participating vendors.

A visit to the Botanica will educate and enlighten you in the rich blend of cultures and spiritual tradition that is New Orleans. The Botanica is a favorite of locals who rely on it for religious supplies. The shop's owner, Sallie Ann Glassman, is an initiated Vodou priestess who calls up and mediates the power of the Spirit. Sallie Ann is internationally recognized for her lectures, art, readings, and healing ceremonies. Visitors may want to commission a visionary painting from Sallie Ann, or may want to have a custom gris-gris bag a magical power talisman made. The truly intrepid and sincerely interested may arrange to attend a Saturday night Vodou ceremony in Sallie Ann's Vodou temple, Achade Meadows. The ceremonies are performed by Sallie Ann and her full ensemble of initiated drummers, singers, and dancers. They are not performers, but actual Vodou practitioners - the real deal.

Description: Scene by Rhys Art Gallery opened in November 2016 to celebrate the music and musicians of New Orleans via the public display and sales of artwork showcasing one very unique view of the local music scene. It is the work of Emilie Rhys, whose career spans 40 years and who frequents music venues all over town creating images live as the musicians perform. Musicians benefit from not only from the visual homage in the artwork, but also from the direct cash commissions Ms. Rhys delivers to them from sales of images in which they are depicted. We invite you to pay us a visit in person at the gallery and flip through some of the sketchbooks – an interesting random way to explore the music world of New Orleans, seen through the eyes of Rhys during the past six years. Has your favorite musician been Scene By Rhys? Come in and find out! The artist also adds colorful gouache to some, turning them into complex paintings. Throughout the gallery you will find Rhys originals framed by the artist. Most drawings, however, are sold unframed, packed in a Clear-Bag envelope with a stiff acid-free backing board, but note that we can frame anything within a few days, and pack/ship to anywhere in Northern America.
