Holidays are traditional times for people to be at home, dining with their families and other loved ones. But sometimes being away from home during holidays like Christmas or New Year's is unavoidable, such as for business, or sometimes it can be by choice. And, during those occasions, it may often be difficult to find places that are open for dining out. After all, restaurant owners and their employees would like to be home with their families as well.

However, there are still a good many first-class dining establishments that will be open in New Orleans on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve/Day. Thirty or more restaurants will be open Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, according to a survey taken recently by the Louisiana Restaurant Association. Christmas Day is the hardest one to find an open restaurant but there are close to 20, again according to the LRA survey. Two of the establishments listed will open their doors for private parties of a sufficient number of people if reservations are made ahead of time.

Most of the open establishments will be serving their normal menus but you can expect some special holiday treats to be offered as well. After all, this is New Orleans, a city internationally renowned for fine cuisine, and we don't intend for anyone visiting here to go hungry on any of those days. No city cares more about good eating, after all, and no city has a finer selection of restaurants offering holiday meals and specials. Some feature buffet-style meals; others are a la carte.

Make sure you check ahead to see which restaurants are open and what the hours will be. Some of them have separate seating times. Check with your hotel guide, concierge or cab driver for recommendations and call a few places. When you find something to your liking, call ahead and make reservations.

Cuisine Type/s: Cajun, French

Description: In New Orleans, where restaurants come and go like a cool day in August, Tujagues has survived eras of war, derpession, and "low-cal" to marke 140 years of outstanding creole cuisine. What has kept patrons and visitors coming back to Tujague's is its food, service, atmosphere, and more atmosphere. When a restaurant has been around as long as Tujague's and has entertained the likes of Cole Porter, O. Henry, Eleanor Roosevelt, Diane Sawyer, Don Johnson, and Dan Akroyd, it must offer more than just good food. Visitors and locals alike want a traditional New Orleans scene complete with ceiling fans, picturesque balconies and a melange of local flavor and at Tujague's they can get their fill. Long before New Orleans bore the name "New Orleans", the bulding at 823 Decatur served as a Spanish armory. Today, Tujague's Restaurant still bears a great resemblance to the Tujague's of old -- The ornately framed mirror brought over from Paris in 1856 by Guillaume Tujague still stands behind the bar. The cypress bar itself is legendary - As New Orleans' oldest standing bar, it survived prohibition with no liquor and three bartenders. Guest books chronicle 140 years of patronage with signatures of such notables as Ty Cobb and John D. Rockefeller. Dining rooms are modest, yet cozy, displaying photographs of famous and infamous patrons, as well as shadowboxes filled with the restaurant's extensive miniature liquor/liquer bottle collection numbering over 5,000.
