Mardi Gras Beads & Supplies

Beads and necklaces are potentially the most popular and well-recognized Mardi Gras souvenir. Many parade Krewes spend anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per parade on beads, which get tossed to the crowds lining the parade route. Because this staple Mardi Gras product is so important to the festivities, Krewes submit their custom bead orders in September to ensure they're ready by February's carnival season.

Originally, Mardi Gras beads were made of glass. The king originally established the tradition of tossing beads at the first daytime Carnival in 1872. Traditional Mardi Gras beads come in three basic colors: Purple, which represents justice; green, which is the symbol of faith; and gold, which signifies power. Persons exemplifying those characteristics were meant to catch the appropriate colored jewelry.

As the tradition of tossing beads grew in popularity, people quickly realized glass beads weren't very practical. Now, they are made of plastic and come in every size and color. In fact, approximately eight million pounds of these small colored spheres are shipped to the United States every year.
