New Orleans has always been famous for it’s music. Jazz, blues and brass bands may be at the forefront, but today the city boasts even more options, from indie rock to Bounce and classical opera.

With so much musical innovation, it’s only natural we’d want to honor the best local music makers for what they do. The “Best of the Beat” Awards, sponsored by OffBeat magazine, does just that, paying tribute each year to musicians who are voted best in a variety of musical categories and genres.

This year’s awards will be staged on the evening of Saturday, January 18 at Generations Hall, (310 Andrew Higgins Drive) just steps away from the Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Convention Center. Tickets are now on sale and the event is open to the public.

Celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, the “Best of the Beat” Awards will take place from 6:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. Visitors from all across the U.S. and abroad are invited to come out and enjoy the festivities.

Past “Best of the Beat” Award ceremonies have honored such internationally renowned, homegrown music stars as Fats Domino, Aaron Neville, The Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Dave Bartholomew, Allen Toussaint, Pete Fountain, Irma Thomas, Trombone Shorty, and Kermit Ruffins.

Artists are honored in dozens of musical categories ranging from traditional jazz to contemporary and encompassing blues, Cajun, zydeco, gospel, R&B, roots rock, Latin, hip hop and many others. Awards are also given to non-musicians who play a vital part in the local music industry.

Performers at this year’s Awards Ceremony will include:

  • Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen
  • Glen David Andrews
  • Brass-A-Holics
  • Cheeky Blakk
  • Feufollet
  • Robin Barnes

And others still to be announced.

This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is Cyril Neville, percussionist and vocalist for the Neville Brothers and a stellar performer in his own right.

More than 20 of New Orleans’ top restaurants and caterers are preparing food for the evening.

Through January 17 tickets to the “Best of the Beat” Awards will be $35 per person. On January 18, the day of the event, they will go up to $40, which is the same price as at the door. To order tickets online go to the following link:

Upon early purchase, you'll be emailed a ticket in PDF form within 24 hours. Please print it out and bring with you. You'll also be on a guest list with a unique ID number for check in at the door.

Music enthusiasts are also encouraged to take part in the online voting, which opens to the public on December 19. Polls stay open until January 10th, so you’ll have plenty of time to vote for all of your favorites. And who knows? You may just discover a new favorite artist or two along the way.
